Cinco De Mayo – Proverbs 5: Your Own Dumb Fault

“His own iniquities will capture the wicked, And he will be held with the cords of his sin.” – Proverbs 5:22

Wicked people are ensnared by their wickedness. It’s the wicked man’s OWN sin that holds him captive. If this is the case, and it is, then why do wicked people spend so much time blaming others for their faults? In our country we have created mass industries to basically shift the blame from the sinner to those around him/her. In many cases, counseling and support groups has become institutionalized finger pointing! If psychology has taught us anything it’s that you can blame your Mom or Dad for anything you do as a responsible adult!

But the Bible cuts though all the pop culture gobbledygook and tells it like it is. It’s his OWN iniquity that holds the wicked captive. It’s the chords of his OWN sin that hold him fast. Our sin got us into this mess, it’s time we just belly up to the bar and own it.

God isn’t trying to make us feel bad by identifying the cause of our bondage; He’s trying to empower us! It’s ONLY by taking responsibility for our faults and sins that we can receive authority to change them. All authority comes from responsibility. Think about it, the most powerful person at the company you work for is the person who is responsible for the most in that company. The person with ultimate hiring and firing power is many times the CEO, or the person responsible to the shareholders or themselves to turn a profit! No profit, no company. Many folks want authority to change things like our proverbial CEO, but refuse to take responsibility. Think about it, most of the time you would receive a raise, your responsibilities increase, you become accountable for more.

No responsibility = no authority. This is why so many believers feel powerless against the sins that beset them. They bemoan the bondage, but rarely take responsibility for forming the chains! Our lack of discipline and choice to sin were the forge for our chains!

LIFE LESSON:

Own your failures, and stop blame shifting; it’s the only way to get free!
